Earth Retaining Structures

Earth retaining structures are required when there is an abrupt change in the ground surface elevation. There are many reasons why an earth retaining structure would be needed and there are many types of earth retaining structures. DEC has experience designing the following earth retaining structures:

  • Secant Pile Walls
  • Anchored Walls
  • Bridge abutment
  • Wing Walls
  • MSE Walls
  • Concrete Gravity Walls
  • Sheet Pile Walls
  • Soldier Pile Walls

DEC has designed earth retaining structures for mining, municipal, commercial, and residential projects. One of our favorite earth retaining projects was a secant pile wall for a mining operation. The project was to drill a 1200 ft deep ventilation shaft using a raise bore machine. The upper 50 ft of the site was loose alluvial deposits. DEC designed a secant pile wall to retain the alluvium so that the raise bore machine could be used to complete the remaining 1150 ft of shaft.
